About this deal

Not only did I enjoy the story itself, but the art to go along with the retelling was equally stunning.

Even today, Medusa still is a bit of culture, folktales, and mythology worldwide from being one of the most charismatic creatures. By the fifth century BCE, however, Medusa and the Gorgons were increasingly depicted as beautiful women in the visual arts as in literature. Lucan: The epic Civil War (60s CE) describes how the venomous vipers of the Sahara were born from Medusa’s blood (9. And that path is retelling these ancient myths from the perspective of, not minor characters, but characters who do not shine in the spotlight. In our latest edition for autumn 2023, we hear from advanced practitioners who work in child health, and who with their hybrid training and experience bring a unique perspective into the needs of patients and their families.there’s not a lot of showing and, this is definitely due to my expectations, i was disappointed to find out it was just the myth as we know it but with feminism. No one in World War Two invaded America, but many European nations were under occupation by Nazi Germany. Uses her goddess powers to turn Medusa’s hair to snakes and her eyes to weapons of mass destruction. But she is also the most famous and the myth of her demise at the hands of Perseus is often recounted.

Some other variations of the myth suggest that Medusa and the other Gorgons were always hideous monsters and covered with snakes.

And I spoke in hope: it felt of utmost importance that this boy should stay on my island – for a day, a week, a month. When she is washed up as a baby on the beach where her elder siblings live, they receive her tenderly. These books allow you to engage with a captivating mythological character, gain cultural and literary knowledge, and explore thought-provoking themes that resonate beyond the ancient world. Junior tries to make a deal to get her out of it, said douche sending him on a seemingly impossible quest. Thank you to the author, Jessie Burton, the illustrator, Olivia Lomenech Gill, and the publisher, Bloomsbury YA, for this opportunity.

Once upon a time, someone remarked of three old women that they had a single eye and a single tooth between them. Also, the pictures are pretty, but honestly I think they sometimes overpowered the text or didn't really fit the tone for me personally. Some modern interpretations also highlight the story’s elements of sexual violence and victim-blaming, drawing attention to the injustices faced by women throughout history. Olivia Lomenech Gill's artwork was the perfect match for the subtleness of emotion exhibited throughout the tale and also the melancholy that exuded from it at the end. However, Medusa’s severed head does appear in the form of the Gorgoneion, a protective amulet or symbol depicting her face.

In some traditions, Perseus also met Atlas, the Titan charged with holding up the heavens, during his travels. Photograph: Andrew Michael/Alamy ‘A vicious little thug’: Perseus with the head of Medusa, by Antonio Canova, Vatican City. Here’s a flavour of what hit me: power and powerlessness, victim shaming, body image, empowerment and finding your identity. So if you are going to read this book without any background in Greek mythology, I probably like the first few pages.
