About this deal

Jesse Lasky Jr., a co-writer on The Ten Commandments, described how DeMille would customarily spread out prints of paintings by Lawrence Alma-Tadema to inform his set designers on the look he wanted to achieve. Arnold Friberg, in addition to designing sets and costumes, also contributed the manner in which Moses ordained Joshua to his mission at the end of the film: by the laying on of hands, placing his hands on Joshua's head. Friberg, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, demonstrated the LDS manner of performing such ordinations, and DeMille liked it. This Pharaoh costume includes a full-length tunic with a decorative gold fabric collar and cuffs, a striped headpiece, and a metallic fabric belt. In total, Bernstein composed 2½ hours of music for the film, writing for a full symphony orchestra augmented with various ethnic and unusual instruments such as the shofar, the tiple, and the theremin. The score is written in a highly Romantic style, featuring unique musical leitmotifs for the film's characters (God, Moses, Rameses, Nefretiri, Dathan, Sephora, Lilia, Joshua, etc.) used in a manner inspired, at DeMille's direction, by the opera scores of Richard Wagner. [57] Bernstein recorded both the diegetic music and the score at the Paramount Studios Recording Stage in sessions spread from April 1955 to August 1956. [58] Reid, John Howard (2006). DeMille was reluctant to cast anyone who had appeared in 20th Century Fox's The Egyptian, [42] a rival production at the time. [43] Several exceptions to this are the casting of John Carradine and Mimi Gibson (in credited supporting roles) and Michael Ansara and Peter Coe (in uncredited minor roles), who appeared in both films.

Nefretiri learns from Memnet that Moses is the son of Hebrew slaves. She kills Memnet, but reveals the story to Moses after he finds the piece of Levite cloth he was wrapped in as a baby, which Memnet had kept. Moses follows Bithiah to Yochabel's house, where he meets his biological mother, brother Aaron, and sister Miriam. Commentary for the film's DVD edition chronicles the historical research done by DeMille and associates.

It is also broadcast with its original Spanish language dub over the second audio program channel. In 2015, for the first time in several years, the network undertook a one-off airing of the film on Easter Sunday night, which fell on April 5. [110]

You don’t even have to work all that hard to search for a costume… I’ve collected all of the best costume ideas for Passover and put them all in here. When I was young, every Passover my brother used to always put a Matzah on his head and pretend it was a Kippah. At the time, I thought it was pretty stupid. Ibid., figs 5–8, 5–18 and 5–19. That’s why, in this post, we’re sharing over 20 fun (and easy) Christian Halloween costume ideas for you to choose from. Making this costume can be as simple as wrapping fabric together, or as elaborate as sewing – it’s up to you! But it can also be a very stressful time choosing a costume that is appropriate, affordable, and doesn’t take forever to assemble. There are several different ways of doing this one, some of which require more effort than others. I’ll just link to some helpful tutorials!A second album of drawings at the Gennadius Library contains 106 drawings and bears the title ‘COSTUMES OF THE ANCIENTS. HOPE’ (see Supplementary Fig. 1b). Twenty-three of these drawings have the same figures as Hope’s drawings (see Figs. 2– 3, 9–10 and 12–13; and Supplementary Figs. 61a–b and 67a–b) and incorporate changes that Hope indicated in his preliminary drawings. The figures in these drawings also have the same scale as the corresponding engravings from the two editions of Costume of the Ancients (see, for example, Fig. 3 and Supplementary Fig. 11a–b), evidence which supports the conclusion that the second album contains final drawings that served as models for the engravings. Footnote 10 Henry Moses, the principal engraver of the plates in the two editions of Costume of the Ancients, appears to be the artist who executed most of the drawings in this album. The attribution to Moses can be deduced from the handwriting on the drawings, from Moses’s signature as engraver on corresponding engravings (see Fig. 3 and Supplementary Fig. 11a–b), and from the introduction to Costume of the Ancients, where Hope singles out Moses for thanks, describing him as ‘the young artist who has engraved the greatest number of my drawings; and those that have been transferred on copper in the most superior manner’. Footnote 11 In general, Moses was known for ‘enjoying a great reputation for his outline plates, which are distinguished for the purity and correctness of the drawing’. Filmed on location in Egypt, Mount Sinai, and the Sinai Peninsula, The Ten Commandments was DeMille's most successful work, his first widescreen film, his fourth biblical production, and his final directorial effort before his death in 1959. [9] It is a remake of the prologue of his 1923 silent film of the same title, and features one of the largest exterior sets ever created for a motion picture. [9] Four screenwriters, three art directors, and five costume designers worked on the film. The interior sets were constructed on Paramount's Hollywood soundstages. The original roadshow version included an onscreen introduction by DeMille and was released to cinemas in the United States on November 8, 1956, and, at the time of its release, was the most expensive film ever made. [9] An Attic red-figure volute krater once in Hope’s collection (Supplementary Fig. 29) is one possible source for the chain of lotus buds and palmettes. In Moses’s engraving of the krater from his Collection of Antique Vases of 1814 (see Supplementary Fig. 30), Footnote 62 he renders the single chain of lotus buds and palmettes in a very similar manner to the double chain in his engravings of the Priestess (Supplementary Fig. 27a–b), except that the chains are more compressed on the skirt of the Priestess. Particularly similar are the shapes of the open lotus buds, and the simple double spirals that link the lotus buds to the palmettes at their bases.
