This edition differs from the third mainly in the inclusion of additional problems, as well as a complete update of the Suggested Reading, together with some changes of exposition, mainly in Chapters 5 and 20. Some may even seem too obvious to mention, but a surprising number of diverse and important facts turn out to be consequences of the ones we shall emphasize. It is well structured, clear and precises, it made me love the subject because for the first time I saw it presented for the logical wonder it is, and as an assortment of formulas to be used.

PREFACE I hold every man a debtor to his profession, from the which as men of course doe seeke to receive countenance and profit, so ought they of duty to endeavour themselves by way of amends, to be a help and ornament thereunto. As a general thing - it's been a long time since I read this textbook but I have good memories of it. It also includes challenging exercises and proofs to help students develop a deeper understanding of the material.It is used in calculus courses, particularly those with a pure mathematics emphasis, at many universities. I am especially grateful to my friends Michael Freeman, Jay Goldman, Anthony Phillips, and Robert Wells for the care with which they read, and the relentlessness with which they criticized, a preliminary version of the book. The inadequacies which preliminary editions always involve were gallantly en­ dured by a rugged group of freshmen in the honors mathematics course at Brandeis University during the academic year 1965-1966.

For this reason, it would be of little value merely to list the topics covered, or to mention pedagogical practices and other innovations. Since the most exciting concepts of calculus do not appear until Part III, it should be pointed out that Parts I and II will probably require less time than their length suggests—although the entire book covers a one-year course, the chapters are not meant to be covered at any uniform rate. I must also thank the students in his course this last academic year, who served as guinea pigs for the new edition, resulting, in particular, in the current proof in Problem 8-20 for the Rising Sun Lemma, far simpler than Reisz’s original proof, or even the proof in [38] of the Suggested Reading, which itself has now been updated considerably, again with great help from Ted.Has a lot of explainig clear graphics,give examples of bizarre functions for clearing concepts,give a original introduction to complex variable by convergent complex power series,makes a formal costruction of the real numbers field, and make at this level unusual excursions in more advanced results as the demostration of the irracionality of pi or the demostration of the trancendence of e. Every aspect of this book was influenced by the desire to present calculus not merely as a prelude to but as the first real encounter with mathematics. It is more convenient, however, to consider addition of pairs of numbers only, and to define other sums in terms of sums of this type. Fortunately, this fact need not be listed separately, since it follows from the property Pl already listed.
