Description

Besides being a rectangular road sign containing different counts of stripes or bars, yards signs also come in different colours to indicate something. Here's what you need to know about the yards sign below. We’ve also got a whole guide dedicated to passing your theory test which should help you get prepared. Start practicing your driving As well as letting you know about imminent service stations, there are also signs that list the next few services along a route. This means you can make a judgement as to whether to stop at the next one, or carry on a bit further. If you make long journeys regularly, you'll soon work out your favourite stopping points. There are even national lists rating motorway services in the UK. Driver location signs A new circular symbol to be used on traffic signs, such as direction signs and advance warning signs, indicating a low emission zone. LEZ entry sign On motorways, brown signs are used where motorists need to take an upcoming exit to arrive at an attraction. The signs often display a symbol as well as a word, to make them especially easy to read and understand. Museums, zoos, ruins and theme parks are all examples of destinations that would be displayed on brown signs. Motorway speed limit signs

Blue rectangles are used to give information, except for on motorways where blue rectangles givedirections So, you’re studying for your theory test and preparing to take driving lessons—exciting times! But also: so many things to learn! Chief among them is how to interpret all the various road signs you might come across on your travels. And that's no mean feat: there are tonnes of sign designs in the UK's Highway Code. Not only do things like shape and colour affect their meaning, but different types of roads have their own unique style of sign too. Okay so now you know some of the basics, let’s run through some road signs and their meanings to get you up to scratch for your theory test. We’ll go through a mixture of common road signs and road signs we know that people find hard on their theory test to make sure we cover all bases. My second issue is that this type of sign does not seem to be mentioned in the highway code. I've searched the "Know Your Traffic Signs" booklet from the DoT but can find only:

Now that you're aware of what the number of bars indicates in these yards signs, it's now time to identify what these signs further mean based on their provided colours. Here they are: The SSI makes several amendments to Schedule 11 advisory signs, and also prescribes additional legends that can be used with the Schedule 2 hazard warning sign, Diagram 562 (exclamation mark). Distance to a speed limit commencing The signs you describe are not prescribed signs as set out in Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 (TSRGD) and would therefore need to be specially authorised. Others are placed on gantries—bridge-like structures—above the road. These ones often tell you if you need to be in a certain lane for a specific destination. For example, if a lane is going to merge into an exit road, there would be a sign to tell drivers that the left lane is only for traffic destined for the next junction. It would direct vehicles heading to other places to move into one of the right-hand lanes. Keeping an eye on direction signs helps avoid dangerous lane-switching near junctions, and reduces the build-up of traffic around certain routes. Motorway junction signs The SSI prescribes two additional legends that can be used on the plate, as illustrated in Figure 12:

Therefore, the introduction of the proposed amendment to TSRGD will not directly result in any increase in cost, but may lead to the installation of signs which cost local authorities more money to install and maintain, at their discretion. Sectors and Groups Affected A new sign to indicate the exit from a low emission zone, incorporating the LEZ symbol. LEZ road marking Countdown markers to speed limits – warning of approach to restricted speed limit on approach to town or village White rectangles are used for giving directions on non-primary routes or you may see them in combination with a warning or regulatory sign to give moreinformation A green-coloured yards sign with white bars: These yards signs are seen when you are nearing the closure of a dual carriageway or upon closing distance with a junction. My first question is why? Most uses of countdowns like this are on higher speed roads and warn of a rapidly approaching deceleration lane or other hazard. That is certainly not the case here. This is a 30mph single carriageway road in a residential area and there are several turnings off the road before the roundabout is reached. What is special about the roundabout as a hazard here? Of course, dangerous drivers might drive at high speed along this road and be caught out by the roundabout, but that could apply to any hazard such as a t-junction or pedestrian crossing. You don't normally see countdown markers for those. Providing flashing lights to define pedestrian and cycle zones will have implications in terms of installation and maintenance costs. It has also been noted that regulation of these areas will be dependent on the lights working effectively.

Yards signs serve as countdown markers that will tell your distance to a particular point or area. These yards signs usually contain bars, and lesser bars mean a lesser distance from the motorway's exit or junction. These signs exist to allow you to prepare for what's ahead after the sign. Traffic in right hand lane of slip road joining the main carriageway has priority over left hand laneMost junction numbers in the UK increase or decrease consecutively. Don't take this as a hard and fast rule, though: some motorways skip junction numbers, often because there are (or were) plans to add in junctions at a later date. However, junction numbers aren't usually signed as you enter a motorway. This can be particularly confusing if you exit one motorway and switch straight onto another. After a junction, there will be a confirmatory direction sign on the side of the motorway. This is to remind you of where the road ultimately leads. Countdown markers on motorways For example, if a lane is closed, this is indicated with a red ‘X’ over the top of it. Or if a lower speed limit is temporarily required, the sign will display a number contained in a red ring. New signs incorporating countdown markers to identify a speed control area approaching. Particularly intended for use on approaches to towns and villages. Symbols for motorhome servicing

Costs will be borne by the roads authority. These costs are not considered to be excessive in the context of the significance and impact of LEZ introduction. Pedestrian and cycle zone – flashing lights (new signs) The proposed reduction in threshold, to require a minimum of parking plus at least one of public toilets and/or fuel during normal shop opening hours will enable more towns and villages (particularly in remote rural areas) to be signed, at the discretion of the road authority. This will benefit road users by highlighting valuable facilities, with positive impacts for businesses within the communities which may be signed as a result. Diagram 562 in Schedule 2 Part 2 of TSRGD 2016 is a warning sign of a danger ahead, and features an exclamation mark. A range of legends are prescribed for use on the white plate below. This should not usually be necessary on unlit roads, although it might sometimes be helpful on lit roads, particularly where the sign itself is unlit. It is noted that these signs are not mandatory, and should only be used at the discretion of the roads authority, at locations where they are considered beneficial. Additional distance to a parking placeDiscussions with local authorities have highlighted the need to avoid excessive road signing, and to limit sign sizes as far as possible, to only convey the necessary information.
